エリック・カール
(アメリカ U.S.A), 1929-2021
ニューヨーク州に生まれる。6歳のときに両親の故郷であるドイツのシュツットガルトへ移る。第二次世界大戦後、同市の造形美術大学に学び、卒業後グラフィック･デザインの仕事に携わる。1952年ニューヨークに戻り、レオ・レオーニの紹介で、ニューヨーク･タイムズ紙のグラフィック･デザイナーになる。その後広告代理店のアートディレクターを経て、フりーのイラストレーター、デザイナーとして活躍。39歳の時に制作した初めての絵本『1,2,3どうぶつえんへ』で1970年ボローニャ国際児童図書展グラフィック賞受賞。以後、斬新なアイディアとコラージュを駆使した鮮やかな色づかいを特徴とした絵本を次々に発表。1969年、ニューヨーク・タイムズ年間最優秀図書となった『はらぺこあおむし』をはじめ、世界中で翻訳・出版され、広く愛されている。主な絵本『ね、ぼくのともだちになって！』（1971年 ボローニャ国際児童図書展グラフィック賞）、『うたがみえる、きこえるよ』『くもさん おへんじどうしたの』など。2002年、マサチューセッツ州アムバーストにエリック・カール美術館が開館。2003年に児童文学遺産賞を受賞。
