Chihiro Iwasaki: Kindness and Beauty

I think that as we realize economic growth at an ever-increasing pace, we do so at the cost of people gradually losing the richness of their hearts … In my picture books, I try to depict the kindness and beauty that has been lost from Japan today. (1972)
Kindness and beauty were important keywords for Chihiro Iwasaki. They were rooted in her values and connected to the works she expressed. Almost half a century has passed since Chihiro’s death, and over this period, society and the environment in which we now live has changed dramatically. If her illustrations continue to capture our hearts and minds, it is likely because the things she cherished are universal. In this exhibition, we will consider the kindness and beauty that Chihiro expressed in her artwork.
