In Commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of His Birth
Evgenii Rachev, Illustrator of The Mitten, and the World of Folktale Picture Books

Evgenii Rachev (1906–1997) is well known for his picture book adaptation of the Ukrainian folktale The Mitten, and for his work on folktale picture books featuring animals dressed in traditional folk costumes. To commemorate the 120th anniversary of his birth, this exhibition showcases the complete collection of Rachev’s works held by the museum. The artist, who lived and worked in both Russia and Ukraine, devoted his life to creating picture books for children during a turbulent era.
In addition, we will exhibit other folktale picture books from the Chihiro Art Museum collection that explore the history of picture books during the dramatic times in which Rachev lived. These works were created by artists who, even in difficult circumstances, continued to seek ways of expression and to pass on a rich cultural heritage to future generations.
