Born in London, England. He studied part-time at the Lambeth School of Art, which he attended in the evenings after finishing his daily work as a junior insurance clerk at the Westminster Fire Office. He also continued studying basic art at the UCL Slade School of Fine Art. Beginning in 1892, Rackham began illustrating for the Westminster Budget Newspaper and, in 1894, published his first picture book, The Dolly Dialogues. The year 1900 marked the breakthrough of his success as a book illustrator with the publication of his illustrated Grimm’s Fairy Tales. He illustrated many books, including Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (1906), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1907), and Mother Goose (1913). Using a multicolored photoengraving process, his deluxe books with fine line work garnered great popularity.
