<Special Exhibition>Celebrating the 111th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth—Suekichi Akaba Exhibition: The Road to Picture Books

Suekichi Akaba (1910-1990) illustrated and authored numerous picture books that are still loved today such as Suho no Shiroi Uma (Suho’s White Horse) and Tsuru Nyobo (The Crane Wife). He was a gifted picture book artist with a natural talent for story interpretation, he was also a master of dramatical direction and had a profound knowledge of the climates and traditional cultures of Japan and China. With his refined approach to artistic expression, he was born to be a picture book artist. This exhibition focuses on the life and works of Akaba, who, amidst the hardships of history discovered picture books 15years after World WarⅡand opened new horizons in the golden age of picture books from the 1960s.
