The turbulent 2010s began with the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11 (“3.11”) of 2011. As children have seen their environment change, artists have embraced the challenge of new themes and forms of expression as they continue conveying their messages to the children of today through their picture books. From the 2000s, the world of picture books has undergone a generational shift, and the remarkable activities of the new generation of artists has also been impressive. In addition, the 2010s saw the emergence of several works that dealt with the 3.11 and Fukushima disasters, as well as a number of picture books on the theme of life and death.
This exhibition, which is being held after a two-year delay, will focus on the social changes experienced by children and the diverse expressions that were required, and created, amid these trying times. Also on display will be picture books that have attracted attention between 2010 and 2021, as well as works by up-and-coming artists.
