Born in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated from Musashino Art University’s Department of Painting. He published his first picture book, Odangopan (The Rolling Pancake), in 1960. Inoue received many awards over the course of his career, including the Bungeishunju Manga Award in 1965, the Tokyo Illustrators Club Award in 1969, the Shogakukan Art Award for Bunbuku Chagama (Bewitched Tea-Kettle) in 1988, the Kodansha Publication Culture Award for Childrens Books for Tsukiyo no Jidosha (Cars in the Moon-lit Night) in 1994, and the Japan Picture Book Awards Grand Prize for Densha Ehon (Picture Book of Trains) in 2001.
