Born in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. In addition to writing and illustrating picture books, he also actively creates wildlife art, designs original merchandise, and writes essays. Murakami has received many awards over his career, including the Graphic Prize at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair for Pinku to Suno-jisan (Pink and Grandfather Snow) in 1986, for Purezento (Present) in 1988, and for Yokoso Mori e (Welcome to the Forest) in 1989. In addition, he won the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Gold Plaque award for Pinku! Paru! (Pink!
