Wu Jianhua
(China), b. 1942
Born in Nanjing, China. From an early age he loved both painting and creating clay dolls and held his first private exhibition of watercolors when he was still in high school. In 1962, Wu took an art-related job at the city’s culture center. During the Cultural Revolution, while working as a coal miner and a teacher, he created Lianhuanhua, or palm-sized picture books of sequential drawings, featuring laborers as the main characters. Since 1978, he has worked as an art editor at Nanjing Daily, performing illustration and design work, and in 1982 started illustrating for children’s magazines. In 1989 he received an Honorary Mention at the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava for Goddess Peak and, in 2002, the Kodansha Publication Culture Award Picture Book Prize for Shitanaga Basan (The Old Lady with the Long Tongue).
