Born Atsushi Iwamatsu in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. He entered Tokyo Art School (known today as the Tokyo University of the Arts) and joined the proletarian arts movement. Yashima was often arrested for his artwork, through which he criticized Japanese militarism, and in 1939 fled from Japan to the United States. He continued his studies at the Art Students League of New York and started illustrating for magazines after the war. In 1953 he published his first picture book, The Village Tree, which he both wrote and illustrated. He received three Caldecott Honors with Karasu Taro (Crow Boy) in 1956, Amagasa (Umbrella) in 1959, and Kaihin Monogatari (Seashore Story) in 1968.
