Takeshi Motai
(Japan), 1908-1956
Born in Tokyo, Japan, as the second son of an inn-keeping family in Nihonbashi. His birthplace was destroyed by the fire that broke out after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923. After graduating from middle school, he studied painting at the Pacific Painting Society Institute and the Kawabata School of Painting. In 1930, he traveled to France on the Trans-Siberian Railway and returned to Japan in 1933. After moving from job to job, he began creating illustrations for the detective story publication Shinseinen (New Young Man) and other magazines and, in 1941, turned his attention to working on picture books. Motai joined the Japan Association of Illustrations for Children in 1946 and was active in the field of picture books and picture magazines during Japan’s postwar reconstruction period. In 1954, he received the Shogakukan Juvenile Culture Award and continued to create artwork even on his sickbed until his death at the age of 48.
