Spent his childhood in Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Among the numerous awards he received both in Japan and abroad were the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Golden Apple for Chikara Taro (Strongman Taro) in 1969, the Kodansha Publication Culture Award Picture Book Prize for Fukimanbuku (Butterbur Flowers) in 1974, and the Japan Picture Book Award for Tobe Batta (Fly, Grasshopper) in 1998 and for Okami no Osama (The Wolf King) in 2009. In 1969, Tashima moved to the town of Hinode in the mountains west of Tokyo, where he took up farming and joined a public movement protesting the construction of a garbage disposal site in the area to protect future generations. In 1998, he moved to the Izu Peninsula and began creating artwork using such natural materials as nuts. In 2009, working in collaboration with the rural community of Tokamachi City in Niigata Prefecture, he converted an abandoned school into the Picture Books and Tree Nuts Art Museum, and in 2013, as part of his art activities at the Setouchi Triennale, he converted an old Hansen’s disease sanatorium in Oshima into the Blue Sky Aquarium. https://www.facebook.com/tashima.seizo/
