Born in Saratov, Russia. His father, a surgeon, gave him his first drawing lesson and his mother imparted a love of music and poetry. In his childhood, Popov had a strong desire to become a doctor, but later changed his aspiration to become an artist. In 1962, he graduated from the Moscow Polygraphic Institute and, since 1964, has been active as a graphic artist in the fields of illustration, painting, and animated films. He was awarded the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Grand Prix for Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe and a gold medal at the Leipzig Book Fair in 1977 for his illustrations for The Arabian Nights. Among his books that have been translated into Japanese are Naze Arasouno? (Why?) and Dareno Kuruma? (Who’s Car?).
