Born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. He studied oil painting at Tama Art University but dropped out before graduating, after which he helped out at his family’s batik printing business. At the age of 20, on the advice of his uncle, artist Rokuro Taniuchi, he started creating picture books. Taniuchi received the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Graphic Prize in 1971 for Natsu no Asa (Summer Morning), the Bologna Children’s Book Fair Critici in Erba Prize in 1972 for Ano Oto Nanda (Who’s Calling Me?), and the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Golden Apple in 1979 for Norainu (Stray Dog) and again in 1980 for Tsuki to Asobou (Let’s Play with the Moon).
