Born in Lauritsala, Finland. She graduated from the graphic arts department of the Institute of Applied Arts in 1967. While working in the field of graphic design creating posters, she turned her attention to children’s books after her illustrations were printed in a magazine. Kaila imparts a lyrical quality to the world of classical fairy tales through her delicate, soft lines and clear colors. Influenced by Renaissance art, her artwork reflects a combination of fantasy and reality. In 1983, Kaila was awarded the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Golden Apple for The Little Mermaid and other H.C. Andersen Fairy Tales.
