Eric Carle
(U.S.A), 1929-2021
Born in New York, the United States and, at the age of six, moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where his parents were from. He studied graphic arts at Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart and started working in that field after graduation. In 1952, Carle moved back to New York City where, through an introduction from Leo Lionni, he found a job working as a graphic designer at The New York Times. He would later leave his full-time job to work freelance, focusing on art and design. In 1970 at the age of 39, he was awarded First Prize for Picture Books at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair for 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo, his first book as both author and illustrator. Carle went on to create numerous picture books full of new ideas with brightly colored pictures using a tissue-paper collage technique. His books have been translated and loved around the globe, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was chosen as one of The New York Times Top Ten Best Illustrated Books of the Year in 1969. Among his many popular books are Do You Want to Be My Friend? which won the First Prize for Picture Books at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 1972, I See a Song, and The Very Busy Spider. In 2002, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art opened its doors in Amherst, Massachusetts. In 2003, Carle received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award (now called the Children’s Literature Legacy Award).
