Born in the Lambeth district of downtown London, England. His grandfather, who was a sailor, was a great storyteller, as was his grandmother. While working a number of odd jobs, Keeping began studying lithography at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art. His picture books, which frequently included social criticism, were often set in the downtown area where he himself was born and grew up. He won the Kate Greenaway Medal for Charley, Charlotte and the Golden Canary in 1967 and again for The Highwayman in 1981, and the Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava Golden Apple for Railway Passage in 1975. https://www.instagram.com/officialkeepinggallery
