Born in Krakow, Poland, to a Jewish family. During World War II, she was sent to a concentration camp but was rescued by the Swedish Red Cross. After the war, she lived in Sweden and reunited with her parents in 1947 and, together, they emmigrated to New York City in 1952. Lobel studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and became a textile designer. At the suggestion of the editor of her husband, Arnold, a picture book author and illustrator, she began creating her own picture books.
