Suekichi Akaba, from Sora, Nigero (Fly Away Birdies!), Kaiseisha Publishing, 1978
Travel is inseparable from the picture books of Suekichi Akaba (1910–1990). Beginning with his first picture book, Kasajizō (The Kasa Jizo), inspired by a journey to a snowy region, Akaba continued to travel extensively throughout Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. He researched folk tales from various regions, historical sites such as the settings of the Genpei War, and locations associated with Japanese mythology, weaving these experiences into his work.
This exhibition explores the relationship between Akaba’s travels and his picture books, highlighting the enduring appeal of his works.
