Born in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and majored in design at the Nihon University College of Art. He received the Choice Award in 1986 and the JAGDA (Japan Graphic Designers Association) New Designer Award in 1990. Arai’s numerous picture books include Yukkuri to Jojoni (Yukkuri and Jojoni); Happii-san (Happy san); Rufuran Rufuran (Refrain, Refrain), which won the Japan Picture Book Award in 2005; Taiyo Orugan (Sun Organ); and Asa ni Natta node Mado wo Akemasu yo (It’s Morning So I’ll Open the Window). In 2005 he received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and in 2006 the Excellence Award of Japan Media Arts Festival for his animated short Sukima no Kuni no Poruta (A Country between the Worlds). https://www.ryoji-arai.com/
