Born in Tokyo, Japan. She studied at the Tokyo Art School (known today as the Tokyo University of the Arts), majoring in oil painting under Ryusaburo Umehara. She was classmates with Eriko Kishida, who later became a poet and her partner in creating picture books. Nakatani taught painting at elementary schools and children’s art classes. Her picture book debut, Jo jo no Kanmuri (The Lion and the Bird’s Nest), as well as Kaba-kun (Hippopotamus), were praised by Swiss children’s book author and publisher Bettina Hurlimann and Père Castor of France, making her a pioneer of the overseas publication of Japanese picture books.
