Yasunari Murakami, from Yokoso Mori e (Welcome to the Forest), Tokuma Shoten, 1988
When do we feel the world is wonderful? Perhaps when we see a small flower blooming in a garden? Or maybe when we find ourselves amid the magnificence of nature? Or when we encounter an amazing work of art, or are touched by the kindness of others? Although we may come from different countries and speak different languages, we all share common sensibilities. Rather than division, what we need in today’s world is to understand that we are all human.
In the picture book Welcome to the Forest, the idea that people are part of the greater nature is presented from perspectives that include that of a bird. In this exhibit, we will showcase the illustrations and words of artists from 10 countries, which we hope will provide visitors with an opportunity to reconsider our world.
