Born in Tokyo, Japan. She studied at the Nihon University College of Art but dropped out of school before graduating. Takeda made her debut as a picture-book author in 1987 with Ashita Ensoku (Tomorrow’s the Class Outing). She earned widespread recognition for Tonari no Seki no Masuda-kun (The Boy Who Sits Next to Me), published in 1991, which won the Kodansha Publication Culture Award and Japan Picture Book Award. In addition to picture books, she illustrates books, designs characters for such children’s television shows as Zawazawamori no Ganko-chan (Ganko chan of Noisy Forest), and is active in the field of animation. In 2007, Takeda won the Japan Picture Book Awards Grand Prize for Okasan, Genki Desuka (Dear Mother, How Are You?).
