Leo was born in East New York and Diane, Glendale, California. Both studied art at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. They got married in 1957 and collaborated in many fields, such as book binding, magazine illustration, and movie posters. The Dillons were awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1976 for Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears and again in 1977 for Ashanti to Zulu: African Traditions, distinguishing themselves as the only artists to have received the honor two years in a row.
