Born in Tokyo, Japan, and graduated from the Department of Fine Arts of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1964. She studied lithography and etching at the Japan Artists Association’s printmaking studio and for three years in a row from 1966 participated in the Japan Print Association’s exhibitions, winning two early accolades in the process: the Newcomer Award and the Encouragement Award. One of her exhibited lithographs attracted the attention of an editor, which led to the publishing of her first picture book, Botan no Kuni (The World of Buttons), in 1967. Nishimaki has been active in a wide range of genres, including as an illustrator for picture books and fairy tales. In 1971, she won the Kodansha Publication Culture Award for Children’s Books for E no Sukina Neko-san (A Cat That Likes Art).
