Born in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He graduated with a major in design from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Tokyo University of the Arts. After initially working in the publicity department of a pharmaceutical company, then for a design company, he went on to become a prolific illustrator and graphic designer for picture books and children’s books from around 1970. Sugiura also works as a book binder. He has received numerous awards, including the Shogakukan Art Award for Furuya no Mori (The Dreadful Drops) in 1979, the Japan Picture Book Award and the Graphic Prize at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair for Matsuge no Umi no Hikosen (Airship in the Sea under Eyelashes) in 1983, and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize Newcomer Award in 1985.
